Recycling versus Second life – Why the telecom industry must put second life ahead of recycling – Re-think sustainability.

Recycling versus Second life – Why the telecom industry must put second life ahead of recycling – Re-think sustainability.

For decades, the telecom industry has celebrated recycling as its environmental achievement. It looks impressive in ESG reports, it is neat and measurable, offering a sense of accomplishment. The WEEE directive have cemented this mindset and OEM’s have embraced the convenience of clearing old equipment from the market, without rethinking the broader lifecycle of their products.

Recycling is reactive- It deals with waste; recycling is not the sustainability success story we make it out to be. However, second life, on the other hand, is initiative-taking and challenges the throwaway culture.

Second-life should be at the centre of all our sustainability strategies, if we trust second-hand cars with our families lives, why hesitate to trust refurbished telecoms equipment? The stigma around second life is outdated and unjustified.

OEMs and operators are now integrating second-life components into their new builds. Reusing equipment helps avoid significant carbon emissions and moves the industry toward true circularity. This shift in mindset from "Grey to Green" means that "Grey" market products, once seen as inferior, are now considered a "Green" solution. This approach is championing a cost-effective, sustainable way to extend product value, reduce waste, lower emissions, and expand access to reliable equipment across global markets.

The telecoms industry has the tools, what is missing is the mindset and commitment. Recycling should be the last resort, not the first. Second-life is not about compromise; it is about leadership.

The telecoms sector has achieved so much but we can all and must do better, businesses joining together, embracing second life, is not only the right thing to do, it is essential for a greener future. True sustainability begins with keeping the equipment in circulation, not breaking it down. We need to rethink, reuse, and redefine what “end of life” really means.
